EDBT helps clean up Flushing Bay!!

"With the understanding that our health and future are intricately linked to the condition of our environment, Jennifer Merendino spearheaded a community clean-up of the Flushing Bay promenade shoreline, which then gave rise to the Oyster Gardening Project.

Oyster Gardening is an estuary restoration and stewardship project coordinated by the NY/NJ Baykeeper organization. Oyster Reefs were once commonplace throughout NY estuaries, filtering our waterways, providing protective habitat for wildlife and shorelines. Each adult oyster filters 50 gallons of water each day.

On June 27, members of the Empire Dragon Boat Team (Akila, Risa, Alex, & Ana) a representative from the NYC Parks Dept.(York) and Gustavo traveled to Governor's Island to participate in an Oyster Gardening training provided by NY/NJ Baykeepers. We were then given 500 baby oysters which we transported and placed in Flushing Bay close to where we paddle. For the next year we will be monitoring their condition and growth and compile the data with other envoronmentalists assessing the state of our water ways. It is our hope that this project brings attention to the need to RESTORE Flushing Bay."
