At the time I was diagnosed with breast cancer almost 9 years ago, I was a busy lawyer with two beautiful, relatively small children. I had no time to spare, especially on things like doctor visits and the myriad treatments associated with this problem. Why me I thought? I had no family history, I exercised regularly and tried to eat healthily. But, nonetheless, there I was, faced with making spur-of-the-moment medical decisions without warning or even time to breathe. But I did make those decisions, I found the time I did not have and eventually, my strength, my hair and my spirit returned. I also discovered that I was blessed with a network of truly exceptional and amazing individuals whose love and support helped me find the courage to battle through the war my body was waging.
Even still I never thought that at this stage of my life, post-breast cancer and a total knee replacement, that I would become involved in a rigorous competitive team sport. How wrong I was to question my ability to participate in dragon boat racing and little did I realize how empowering and rewarding it would prove to be, especially on a team of survivors. Having gone through the hell and back we are strong, dedicated, vital women who have come to dragon boating as a novel support system for survivors and as a vehicle to raise funds for cancer research and related programs.
I am a newcomer to the team but I am already infused with the effervescent effect that dragon boating produces. Moreover, there is such an incredible sense of unity and camaraderie that the synchrony supplies as well as an extraordinary sense of pride in one’s individual strength and ability; a powerful combination.
I am thrilled to be able to help raise awareness as well as funds for cancer research and to encourage other survivors to keep moving forward.
